JAPAN
The history of tea in Japan traces back to the 8th century, when the first references appeared in Japanese records. Tea gained prominence among the religious classes when Japanese priests and envoys, sent to China to explore its culture, brought tea seeds back to Japan.
Eisai, founder of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism, played a pivotal role during the Kamakura period (1185-1333). He introduced tea seeds to Kyoto, marking the beginning of domestic tea production in Japan. From there, tea culture blossomed, eventually culminating in the Sado (Japanese tea ceremony), considered the epitome of elegance during that era.
