Gyokuro, which translates to “jade dew,” is a shaded green tea from Japan. Its history is steeped in tradition and craftsmanship. Originally named after the tea produced by Yamamotoyama, it has become synonymous with elegance and refinement.

In 1835, Yamamoto Kahei, the sixth owner of the Yamamotoyama tea company, stumbled upon a remarkable method used by tea farmers in Uji, Japan. They shaded their tea plants with straw umbrellas to protect the leaves from frost. Inspired by this practice, Yamamoto Kahei introduced the shading technique to tea cultivation, resulting in a unique tea variety: Gyokuro.
